Reminders: 

  • Please send in all white Collection Envelopes this Monday, October 7th (Count Day #1) and on this Thursday, October 10th (Count Day #2). I appreciate your support!

What We’re Learning:

Math-We will be solving word problems involving addition and subtraction to 10 using the process: Understand, Plan, Solve and Explain.

Reading- We will be reviewing Story Elements: character, setting, plot:problem and solution, Asking Questions and Visualization.

Writing-We wrap up our unit on Narrative Writing.

Phonics: We will review all of our digraphs: ch,sh, th an wh.

Content- We will culminate our unit on weather.

S.T.E.A.M. We will research the features of fall gardens in preparation for our planting.

  • Mark your calendars-Conference Week is October 14th-18th. This will be an Early Release week. I will send home your conference times on Monday, September 30th.

What We’re Learning:

Math-We will work on our Subtraction Strategies (number line, using counters, counting back, drawing pictures, tens frames) as well as solving word problems involving subtraction.

Writing-We wrap up our unit on Narrative Writing.

  • We are going to Pike’s Nursery this Friday, September 20th! Please have your child wear his/her Tritt shirts.
  • Fall Break: September 23rd-September 27th!

What We’re Learning:

Math-We will wrap up our Addition to 10 Unit and will start Subtracting Numbers Within 10. Please have your child practice his/her fact fluency every night for 5 minutes using either Moby Max or math flashcards. Thank you!

Reading- We will continue Asking Questions as well as making “Mind Movies” while we read.

Writing-We  will continue adding details to our personal narratives, as well as practice editing our sentences.

Phonics: We will learn the digraphs ch and sh

Content- We will start our Weather unit.

S.T.E.A.M. We will visit Pike’s Nursery to learn about how we can successfully grow different plants throughout the different seasons.

  • CogAt Testing this week: Wednesday through Friday.
  • Family Journals went home today! Please remember to write a short response to your child (in print please) and send back on Tuesday.
  • Homework Journals are going home Tuesday. Please send these back on Friday! There will be more information sent home in an email on Tuesday.

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will start learning Addition strategies such as using a number line, manipulatives and counting on.

Reading- We will learn about the differences between fiction and nonfiction, as well as learn about the Table of Contents, Glossary, and Index.

Writing-We  will continue adding details to our personal narratives, trying to answer the questions, Who?, Where? Why? and How?

Phonics: We will focus on the -ob and -og families.

Content- We will wrap up our unit on Goods and Services and Scarcity.

  • Morning Run-Every Monday morning from 7:20 a.m.-7:40 a.m.. Please have your child wear sneakers every Monday.

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will wrap up our unit on place value for the numbers 11-19. Students will continue composing and decomposing numbers while recognizing the tens and ones. There will be an assessment on Friday.

Reading- This week we will identify and describe the plot of a story, including the problem and the solution.

Writing-We are continuing to write new narratives each week, while building upon our details and descriptions as we evolve as writers.

Phonics: We will focus on the -et and -an families.

Content- Goods and Services including the concept of scarcity.

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will learn about place value for the numbers 11-19. Students will compose and decompose numbers while recognizing the tens and ones.

Reading- This week we will delve in the characters and settings of the books we read and why these story elements are important to our reading comprehension.

Writing-We “published” our very first narratives this week. As we write our new narratives this week, we will focus on adding more detail sentences to answer the questions, Who? What? Why? and How?

Phonics: We will focus on the –ap and -am families.

Content-We continue learning about the names of our continent, country, state, and city. There will be an assessment on Friday. Students did a great job memorizing their address this week.

Reminders: 

  • FAST Classes start this week! Please send a note saying which classes your child will be attending on which days, as well as the Session, if that applies.
  • Scholastic Book orders were sent home in each folder today. Please place all orders by next Friday, August 16th!

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will continue our unit on Number Sense to 120, and will add in odd and even numbers.

Reading- This week we will learn about “Reading Buddies,” which are strategies which will help with decoding. We will also continue to work on short vowel words.

Writing-Students will start writing about their very own “Small Moment” narratives.

Phonics: We will continue reviewing the short vowel and consonant sounds in words.

Content-We will learn about our address, including our continent, country, state and city.

Reminders: 

  • Open House is this Tuesday evening, August 6th. The 1st session starts at 6:30 p.m. and the 2nd session starts at 7:30 p.m. I hope to see you all here!

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will start our unit on Number Sense to 120

Reading- We will start building our Readers’ Workshop routines. We will also review our reading strategies and I will start introducing the story elements: characters, problem and solution. I will also assess students on sight words and reading levels.  

Writing-We will start building our Writers’ Workshop routines. We will also kick off our Narrative Writing Unit. Students will get a chance to write about many of the special small moments in their lives throughout this unit.

Phonics: We will start reviewing the short vowel and consonant sounds in words.

Content-We will be reading all of my favorite books that teach about kindness and respect to start our year off right!

Welcome to Mrs. Fernandes’ 2019-2020 First Grade Classroom! I am so excited to meet all of my new students and their families at Meet and Greet this Tuesday, July 30th, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45. This is my 14th year teaching and every year I look forward to new and exciting adventures in learning. My husband Tom and I have 3 daughters, Catherine, 15, at Pope, Shannon, 13, at Hightower and Mary, 8, at Tritt. We have lived in the East Cobb community for 15 years and I look forward to building our classroom community with your children this year.
