Mrs. Fernandes’ 2017-2018 1st Grade Class!

Welcome to Mrs. Fernandes’ Class!

A warm welcome to all of those who will be joining me for the 2017-2018 school year. It will be an awesome year! For those of you who do not know me, this will be my 11th year teaching and I could not be more excited to share it with your children! I earned my Master’s Degree in Education in New York City, then moved to Georgia and completed my training in Orton Gillingham, and shortly after that earned my Gifted Endorsement from the University of North Georgia. As you can see, I am extremely passionate about education and am dedicated to giving each of your children a strong foundation from which they can thrive. My husband Tom and I are parents to three girls, Catherine, 13, Shannon, 11 and Mary, 6.  We live with our Australian Shepherd, Luke, in East Cobb. You can excitedly announce to your children that we are going to be getting a puppy in the next couple of weeks and I promise to share lots of photos, and PERHAPS a puppy debut this fall!

I’m excited to meet you all at our Meet and Greet, Thursday, July 27th from 9:00 a.m.-9:45 a.m.  Our room number is Room 205.

Week of May 15th!

Image result for happy mother's day

Well, Tritt Tigertown was a hit, to say the very least! Thank you to all of my wonderful volunteers! I don’t know who had more fun, the students or the adults! Thank you, Elaine, as always for the beautiful pictures that really captured the day.

I hope you all had a fantastic Mother’s Day and actually got to enjoy your muffins with your children!

I can hardly believe that this is our last full week of school. Our only event going on this week is Field Day this Friday, May 19th.

This week we will be learning about Analog Time in Math. I will be finishing up year-end Reading Assessments in Reading. We will be writing about our favorite First Grade memories and our aspirations for our summers in Writing. In Social Studies we will be learning about the effect of the scarcity of resources. We will draw from our experiences at Tritt Tigertown to bring this concept to life for us and to make some real world connections.

I hope that you all have a wonderful week!

Melissa

Week of May 8th!

 Weekly Reminders:

  • Tritt Tiger Town this Friday, May 12th! Our goal is to have each student earn $10.00 to spend by Friday. Check in with your child on their running total this far!
  • Library Books DUE- Our last day going to the ILC will be this Monday, May 8th. Please send in ALL library books from home, as they are all due! Thank you for saving me work down the road!!
  • NO Homework This Week!- There will be no more homework, nor spelling tests this year! However, have your children read for 20 minutes each day, as well as practice their math facts! It is important so they do not give up any of the great gains they have made this year!
What We’re Learning This Week:
Math: We will spend the last couple weeks of school spiraling back through all that we have learned this year! We will be doing this through fun games and activities!

Reading: We will spend the last couple weeks reviewing all of our reading strategies that we have learned this year. I will also begin assessing for our end of the year report cards.

Writing: We will be writing a fiction story about an imaginary bug world, to accompany a painting they created. We will also be writing all about their Mothers!!!

Science: We will be wrapping up our unit on Animals .

Social Studies:  We will be wrapping up our unit on Goods and Services, culminating with Tritt Tiger Town!

Enjoy your week!

Melissa
