Week of September 4th!

Reminders:

  • Please fill the GREEN SHEET in your child’s blue folder with photos-front and back- of your child’s special moments by thisFriday, September 7th. This will be used to help them with writing ideas for their stories (narratives) this year.
  • CogAt testing will be this week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please make sure your children are well rested and have a good breakfast.
  • We will be going to the ILC  this Wednesday. Please send in your child’s library books.
  • There is NO Family Journal this week. We have several families traveling this weekend.
  • Homework will start NEXT week due to the short week and testing this week!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will start decomposing numbers into tens and ones, i.e. 76=70+6, as well as working on place value. We will continue to work on addition facts, as well. PLEASE make/buy flashcards for your child and practice them for 5 minutes each night. Thank you to those of you who have sent in pictures of your child practicing his/her flashcards. It is not too late to send these to me.

Reading-This week we have been focusing on Story Elements: Setting, Characters and Plot (beginning, middle of end). Next week we will continue to review this, as well as learning about Asking Questions when we read. Students will learn that good readers “Ask Questions” when they read!

Writing-We will continue writing our stories, this week focusing on bringing our characters to life. PLEASE fill the green sheet with pictures (front and back if possible) from your child’s life, so that these can be used for writing ideas. If you can send these in by next Friday, that would be wonderful. Thank you!

Phonics-We will be learning about words in the -ED and -ELL families.

Science- We will start our unit on Magnets, focusing on the vocabulary words: attract, repel, force, and poles.

S.T.E.A.M. Buddies! We are lucky to have partnered with Mrs. Adams’ third grade class to be S.T.E.A.M. buddies with once a month. We will be reading and doing activities together! We had our first session today! Ask your child about it.

Week of August 27th!

  • Please fill out and return the Performing Arts form and envelope for your child.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will continue our Addition to 10 Unit. We are working on automaticity right now for addition problems whose sum is 10 and below: 6+4, 3+2, 7+1, etc….PLEASE make/buy flashcards for your child and practice them for 5 minutes each night. Bonus: If you take a picture of your child using his/her flashcards, he/she will get 2 tickets!

Reading-We learned about all of our helpful reading decoding (sounding out) strategies: Eagle Eye, Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake and Flippy Dolphin. Next week, we will be learning about Story Elements: characters, setting and plot (beginning, middle, end, problem and solution.

Writing-We started our Narrative Unit this past week, and will continue writing stories this week. We will also continue to focus on capital letters and ending punctuation in our sentences.

Phonics-We will be learning about words in the -AN and -ET families.

Social Studies-Students will learn about Needs/Wants, Supply/Demand and the vocabulary term “Scarcity.”

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We wrapped up our Number Sense Unit this week and will start our Addition Unit next week. We will work on the Counting On strategy, as well as drawing pictures, using manipulatives and using a number line.

Reading-We will start our Readers’ Workshop this week while learning our decoding reading strategies: Eagle Eye, Stretchy Snake and Chunky Monkey.

Writing-We started our Narrative Unit this past week, and will continue writing stories this week. We will also continue to focus on capital letters and ending punctuation in our sentences.

Phonics-We reviewed the short vowel sounds in CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with the vowels a,e and i this week. Next week we will be reviewing CVC words with o and u.

S.T.E.A.M.-We will have our S.T.E.A.M. kick-off week and will do a fun activity incorporating the “Arts” into our S.T.E.M.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will continue our unit on Number Sense to 120. Students will continue to practice counting, writing, and identifying their numbers correctly.

Reading-I will wrap up my reading assessments this week while continuing to teach the students how to rotate between our different readers’ workshop stations.

Writing-We are working very hard on writing our sentences neatly, with a capital letter, and a punctuation mark at the end. They are reviewing that telling sentences end in a period and question sentences end in a question mark. We will also start writing narrative stories this week.

Phonics-We will be reviewing short vowel sounds in CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.

Social Studies-Students will be identifying their global address on a map. We will start by having them write their own address, and then we will expand  to their country and continent, as well.

First Week Wrap-Up!

  • Open House is this Tuesday, August 7th. The first session starts at 6:30 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. There is also a P.T.A. meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.
  • We started our Family Journals today! They are in the “Return to School” side of the Blue Communication folders. Please read your child’s letter and respond on the right hand side. We will send these home weekly. It is a great way to chronicle their writing development, as well as encourage communication skills throughout the year.

What we are learning next week:

  • Math-I will be pre-assessing students on our Number Sense Unit (numbers 1-120). We will begin this unit which includes counting, identifying numbers, writing numbers, skip counting, etc.
  • Reading-I will be assessing reading levels, as well as establishing our reading workshop routines.
  • Writing-I will be assessing students on our new unit, Narrative Writing. We will begin our unit, cultivating our little story tellers!
  • Social Studies-We will begin to learn about the story of our nation and how our individual stories relate.
