Reminders:

  • There is a Reading Game in your child’s blue folder on the “Return to School” side. If your child completes this over break, they will receive a reward when they return.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-This week we will wrap up our unit on Subtraction to 10.  Please send a picture to me of your child practicing his/her flashcards, if you haven’t already. He/she will earn (2) tickets!! Please practice these with your child every night! THANK YOU!!

Reading-We will compare the features of Fiction and Non-fiction books.

Writing-Students will write about a small moment from their fall break.

Phonics-We will be learning about the words in the -UM (drum) and -UN (i.e. spun) families. We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Science- We will start our unit on Weather, perfect timing for the change of seasons upon us! Students will be learning about the different forms of precipitation.

S.T.E.A.M. Our class had a great time creating a magnetic device that could attract a dog’s collar out of a drain. All students were successful in this mission. All videos have been uploaded to Seesaw, so if you haven’t watched them yet, be sure to check them out!

Reminders:

  • Homework folders will be sent home Monday. Please return this Friday! Everyone handed in their homework this week! Awesome job!!
  • Please write in your child’s Family Journal and return it on Monday.
  • We will be going to the ILC this Tuesday. Please send in all library books!
  • Cobb County September Break is next week: September 24th-28th!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will start our unit on Subtraction. Students will be subtracting numbers within 10, i.e. 10-7=3, 8-2=6. We will be learning how to count backwards, use a number line, use pictures/manipulatives, as well as counting on. Please send a picture to me of your child practicing his/her flashcards. Reading-We will continue asking questions while we read. Students are learning how this strategy actually improves reading comprehension.  We are working on the questions: Who? What? When? and Why? and How? before, during and after reading. We will also start answering comprehension questions after we read.

Writing-We will use our picture pages to write a narrative this week. We will be focusing this week on editing our stories for capitalization and punctuation.

Phonics-We will be learning about the words in the -OB (blob) and -OG (i.e. clog) families. We will have a spelling test on Friday. All students do SO well on our first one! Words to study will be in the red homework folders.

Science- We will be going to the ILC on Tuesday to create an activity on magnets which will be uploaded to Seesaw. We will also be finishing our Magnet S.T.E.A.M. activity. Pictures of our final projects will also be uploaded to Seesaw, so please let me know if you are needing help with creating your login.

S.T.E.A.M. We will be finishing our S.T.E.A.M.  activity involving magnets.

Week of September 10th!

Reminders:

  • If you haven’t yet, please fill the GREEN SHEET sent home with photos of your child’s special moments and send it in. This will be used to help them with writing ideas for their stories (narratives) this year.
  • Homework folders will start this week! Their Red Homework Folders will be sent home on Monday. Please return all folders with completed work Every Friday!
  • Please write in your child’s Family Journal and return it on Monday.
  • Your children all did a wonderful job with testing! We had popsicles at the new picnic area on the playground to celebrate!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be wrapping up our unit on Place Value and expanded form. There will be an assessment on Friday.

Reading-This week we will be learning that good readers ask questions when they read.  We will practice asking our Who? What? When? and Why? questions before, during and after reading. We will also review the story elements when reading.

Writing-We will continue adding details to our stories to help bring our characters to life for our readers by describing what they say and what they do. Please send in your child’s pictures if you haven’t already! Thank you!

Phonics-We will be learning about the words in the -ICK  (i.e. brick) and -IP (i.e. slip) families. Our first Spelling Test will be this Friday! Words to study will be in the red homework folders.

Science- Last week we went to the ILC and did research on Magnets. Our class did an awesome job taking notes from Pebble Go. This week we will be wrapping up our unit on Magnets and will continue to focus upon the vocabulary words: attract, repel, force, and poles. We will have an assessment this Friday.

S.T.E.A.M. We will be doing a S.T.E.A.M.  activity involving magnets.

Week of September 4th!

Reminders:

  • Please fill the GREEN SHEET in your child’s blue folder with photos-front and back- of your child’s special moments by thisFriday, September 7th. This will be used to help them with writing ideas for their stories (narratives) this year.
  • CogAt testing will be this week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please make sure your children are well rested and have a good breakfast.
  • We will be going to the ILC  this Wednesday. Please send in your child’s library books.
  • There is NO Family Journal this week. We have several families traveling this weekend.
  • Homework will start NEXT week due to the short week and testing this week!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will start decomposing numbers into tens and ones, i.e. 76=70+6, as well as working on place value. We will continue to work on addition facts, as well. PLEASE make/buy flashcards for your child and practice them for 5 minutes each night. Thank you to those of you who have sent in pictures of your child practicing his/her flashcards. It is not too late to send these to me.

Reading-This week we have been focusing on Story Elements: Setting, Characters and Plot (beginning, middle of end). Next week we will continue to review this, as well as learning about Asking Questions when we read. Students will learn that good readers “Ask Questions” when they read!

Writing-We will continue writing our stories, this week focusing on bringing our characters to life. PLEASE fill the green sheet with pictures (front and back if possible) from your child’s life, so that these can be used for writing ideas. If you can send these in by next Friday, that would be wonderful. Thank you!

Phonics-We will be learning about words in the -ED and -ELL families.

Science- We will start our unit on Magnets, focusing on the vocabulary words: attract, repel, force, and poles.

S.T.E.A.M. Buddies! We are lucky to have partnered with Mrs. Adams’ third grade class to be S.T.E.A.M. buddies with once a month. We will be reading and doing activities together! We had our first session today! Ask your child about it.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will continue our Addition to 10 Unit. We are working on automaticity right now for addition problems whose sum is 10 and below: 6+4, 3+2, 7+1, etc….PLEASE make/buy flashcards for your child and practice them for 5 minutes each night. Bonus: If you take a picture of your child using his/her flashcards, he/she will get 2 tickets!

Reading-We learned about all of our helpful reading decoding (sounding out) strategies: Eagle Eye, Chunky Monkey, Stretchy Snake and Flippy Dolphin. Next week, we will be learning about Story Elements: characters, setting and plot (beginning, middle, end, problem and solution.

Writing-We started our Narrative Unit this past week, and will continue writing stories this week. We will also continue to focus on capital letters and ending punctuation in our sentences.

Phonics-We will be learning about words in the -AN and -ET families.

Social Studies-Students will learn about Needs/Wants, Supply/Demand and the vocabulary term “Scarcity.”

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We wrapped up our Number Sense Unit this week and will start our Addition Unit next week. We will work on the Counting On strategy, as well as drawing pictures, using manipulatives and using a number line.

Reading-We will start our Readers’ Workshop this week while learning our decoding reading strategies: Eagle Eye, Stretchy Snake and Chunky Monkey.

Writing-We started our Narrative Unit this past week, and will continue writing stories this week. We will also continue to focus on capital letters and ending punctuation in our sentences.

Phonics-We reviewed the short vowel sounds in CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words with the vowels a,e and i this week. Next week we will be reviewing CVC words with o and u.

S.T.E.A.M.-We will have our S.T.E.A.M. kick-off week and will do a fun activity incorporating the “Arts” into our S.T.E.M.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will continue our unit on Number Sense to 120. Students will continue to practice counting, writing, and identifying their numbers correctly.

Reading-I will wrap up my reading assessments this week while continuing to teach the students how to rotate between our different readers’ workshop stations.

Writing-We are working very hard on writing our sentences neatly, with a capital letter, and a punctuation mark at the end. They are reviewing that telling sentences end in a period and question sentences end in a question mark. We will also start writing narrative stories this week.

Phonics-We will be reviewing short vowel sounds in CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.

Social Studies-Students will be identifying their global address on a map. We will start by having them write their own address, and then we will expand  to their country and continent, as well.

First Week Wrap-Up!

  • Open House is this Tuesday, August 7th. The first session starts at 6:30 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. There is also a P.T.A. meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.
  • We started our Family Journals today! They are in the “Return to School” side of the Blue Communication folders. Please read your child’s letter and respond on the right hand side. We will send these home weekly. It is a great way to chronicle their writing development, as well as encourage communication skills throughout the year.

What we are learning next week:

  • Math-I will be pre-assessing students on our Number Sense Unit (numbers 1-120). We will begin this unit which includes counting, identifying numbers, writing numbers, skip counting, etc.
  • Reading-I will be assessing reading levels, as well as establishing our reading workshop routines.
  • Writing-I will be assessing students on our new unit, Narrative Writing. We will begin our unit, cultivating our little story tellers!
  • Social Studies-We will begin to learn about the story of our nation and how our individual stories relate.

Welcome to Mrs. Fernandes’ First Grade Class 2018-2019!

Hello! I am so excited that your child will be in my first grade class for the 2018-2019 (how can that be?) school year! It will be a fantastic year for all! I am so thankful that I have been able to teach for 12 wonderful years, and I look forward to sharing this next year with you. I know that we all have a restful summer break ahead of us, but for those of you who like to get things squared away early, I have posted our School Supply List below. I will be spending the summer with my husband Tom and our three dynamic daughters: Catherine 14, Shannon 12 and Mary 7 so therefore, will be READY to start back up come August 1st!! Our Meet and Greet will be on Monday, July 30th, from 9:00 a.m.-9:45 a.m.  Have a memorable summer!

Week of May 21st!

First of all, a HUGE thank you to all of our Tritt Tiger Town volunteers. The kids all had a blast! My room is always the carnival room, so it is always a bit more labor intensive, so thanks again!

I  can hardly believe that this will be my last blog post of the year! We had a fantastic year and I expect to get MANY visitors next year!! 🙂

So, for this week, let’s take a deep breath and do the following:

Monday: I will start sending materials home. Please send in an extra bag in case we need them. Also, we will be signing yearbooks! Please send in your child’s yearbook.  For students who don’t have one yet, I will provide an autograph book. There will be a Regular Dismissal.

Tuesday: Pajama Game Day! Students can bring in their favorite games and enjoy playing them in their pajamas. Early Release Dismissal.

Wednesday: No book bags! Early Release Dismissal!

Report cards will be mailed home after the last day of school. I have stamps from you all, so thank you!

Happy Summer-I will miss you all!
