2018 Wrap-Up and What’s Up In the New Year!

Reminders and Requests:

  • THANK YOU for all of my generous and thoughtful gifts! I am a lucky teacher, indeed!
  • We are in need of New Supplies for the New Year!                                                                          For our classroom: Wet Ones! We need to keep our room clean!                                                          For your children: New crayons, markers and colored pencils. Your little artists deserve new supplies!

What we will be learning:

Math– Missing Addends: We will learn how to complete equations by solving for the unknown number i.e. 4+ ___=12

Reading- We will be comparing and contrasting the adventures of characters from different stories.

Writing-We will write about our New Year’s resolutions as well as kick off our Opinion writing unit.

Phonics: We will learn about the long vowels sounds a and i with a silent e as in skate and nine.

Week of December 17th!

Reminders:

  • There will be no written homework this week! Enjoy reading holiday themed books with your sweet children!
  • Please have your children practice reciting their holiday wish this week at home. This is a wish that we wrote as a class and will be reciting for the 1st and 2nd grades on Friday, December 21st: “Mrs. Fernandes’ class wishes a happy life for everyone with healthy food, clean water, safe shelter and people who love them. Happy Holidays!”
  • Thursday and Friday are Early Release Days!

Math– We will wrap up our  unit on true/false equations and will have an assessment at the end of the week.

Reading- I will be completing all reading assessments for the second quarter and we will be reviewing all reading skills and strategies we have learned this year.

Writing-We will write about creative ways to catch a gingerbread man.

Phonics: We will play fun games to review phonics words of the year so far.

Week of December 10th!

Reminders:

  • We will be going to the ILC on Wednesday this week. Please send in your child’s library books. We can’t go on Tuesday this week due to S.T.E.A.M.

What We’re Learning: 

Math– We will be moving on to identifying equal equations. For example: 6+4=7+3. Student will have to identify equations as true or false. 3+6=5+4 is a True statement. 2+7=8+2 is a False Statement. I will teach students to solve each side before comparing.

Reading- This week I will start Q2 Reading Assessments. We will also continue reading fun, holiday themed books while reviewing all of the reading skills we have learned so far this year: Characters, Setting, Beginning, Middle, End, Asking Questions, Main Idea and Author’s Purpose.

Writing-We will be writing “How To” books about making gingerbread cookies. This will culminate our Informational Writing unit. Students have done a very nice job writing teaching and how to books this quarter. 

Phonics-We will be reviewing all the phonics skills that we learned in Q2: blends and digraphs.

Social Studies-We will be wrapping up our unit on Thomas Jefferson. We will finish our teaching books about him and all of his contributions.

S.T.E.A.M. Students will be creating their own versions of The Gingerbread Man by creating their own characters, refrain, and ending. They will be creating their characters out of supplies and will then act out their versions with musical instruments of their choice.

Week of December 3rd!

Reminders:

  • Today, Friday, we had a visit from Fox 5 meteorologist, Ryan Beesley. Fox will air pictures/videos from his visit during tonight’s 5 p.m. -6 p.m. broadcast, as well as tomorrow morning from 7 a.m.-8 a.m.
  • We met with our STEAM buddies today from Mrs. Adams’ 3rd grade class. Please check Seesaw to find your child’s gingerbread man hideout creations.
  • Also, please check Seesaw to see your child’s transformation into Ben Franklin!

What We’re Learning: 

Math– We will be “putting it all together,” connecting addition and subtraction with fact families. For example, the fact family for 8, 6 and 14 is: 8+6=14, 6+8=14, 14-8=6, 14-6=8.

Reading- This entire month we will be reading fun, holiday themed books while reviewing all of the reading skills we have learned so far this year: Characters, Setting, Beginning, Middle, End, Asking Questions, Main Idea and Author’s Purpose.

Writing-We will continue our informational writing unit this week. This week students will be writing teaching books about Thomas Jefferson.

Phonics-We will be learning about words that have the blends: ph as in phone and ck as in clock.

Social Studies-We will be learning about another of our brilliant founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson. Students always love learning about his bravery and vision while starting our country!

S.T.E.A.M. We had a GREAT time trying to revise the ending of, The Gingerbread Man, by creating a hideout for him with Mrs. Adams’ 3rd grade class. Check out our pictures on Seesaw!

Week of November 26th!

Reminders:

  • All pictures of your children’s Thanksgiving Parade creations have been posted to Seesaw. These were amazing and everyone had a wonderful time!

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will focus upon solving word problems this week involving subtraction following the process: Understand, Plan, Solve and Explain. Students will also circle the facts and underline the question before solving!

Reading- Students will be learning about Author’s Purpose this week. We use the acronym P.I.E. (P=Persuade, I=Inform, E=Entertain). Students will identify the author’s purpose as well as give details to support this.

Writing-We will continue our informational writing unit this week. This week students will be writing teaching books about Ben Franklin.

Phonics-We will be learning about words that have with the blends: ch as in branch and sh as in sh as it ship.

Social Studies-We will be learning about one of our brilliant founding fathers, Ben Franklin. Students always love learning about how so many of his ingenious inventions are still used today.

Week of November 12th!

Reminders

  • Please send in any canned foods for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Our class goal is to get to 100 items! We’re currently at 35.
  • HELP NEEDED: Calling Recycled Materials!!Please send in cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls,and/or  water bottles through Monday, Tuesday and/or Wednesday.
  • Mark your calendars! Parents are invited to attend the 1st Grade Thanksgiving Parade, our version of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, on Friday, November 16th at 10:00 a.m. (time change). This will culminate our S.T.E.A.M. activity.

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will start our subtraction unit to 20 i.e. 14-8=6. Please continue to work on the addition flashcards at home. This will help tremendously with subtraction!

Reading- We will be reading fun, Thanksgiving-themed books this week and will review our comprehension and reading strategies.

Writing-This week students will write about things that we are thankful for, as well as fun, turkey related creative writing

Phonics-We will be learning about words that start with the blends: th as in they and wh as in why.

Science- We will be learning about healthy eating choices and balanced meals this week.

S.T.E.A.M.-We will be creating characters, animals, and or people out of recycled materials for our Thanksgiving Parade.

Week of November 5th!

Reminders

  • We will be going to the ILC on Monday. Please send in all library books.
  • Please send in any canned foods for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Our class goal is to get to 100 items! We are on 7.
  • There is NO school for students this Tuesday, November 6th for Election Day. If you send in your voting sticker with your child, he/she will get 2 tickets.
  • Please send back Sound Permission trip forms and money this week. They are going home on Monday.
  • Mark your calendars! Parents are invited to attend the 1st Grade Thanksgiving Parade, our version of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, on Friday, November 16th at 1:45 p.m. This will culminate our S.T.E.A.M. activity.

What We’re Learning:

Math– We will start solving word problems with addition problems to 20. They will be using the steps: Understand, Plan, Solve and Explain. While reading the problems, students will be circling the facts and underlining the question.  Continue practicing math facts at home. Students are making great progress!

Reading- We will continue learning about Main Idea and Details this week. All students should be reading aloud to someone for 20 minutes a night!

Writing-This week students will be writing a teaching book about something that they are an expert at.

Phonics-We will be learning about words that start with the blends: sn- as in snug and tr- as in trip.

Science- We will wrap up our unit on sound.

S.T.E.A.M.-Students had a fun time creating their recess bells. I hope you all had a chance to watch their videos on Seesaw!

Week of October 29th!

Reminders:

  • The only homework this week will be to read 20 minutes each night, as well as practice math facts! I know it will be a crazy and tiring week for all! Read some fun, Halloween-themed books with your children.
  • Please send in any cans and/or tin pans you have at home for our next S.T.E.A.M. project.
  • The Tritt-Mazing Race is Monday. The first grade will be racing from 9:15-10:15 a.m. Please come to cheer on your little Rockstars!!
  • Our class earned our fourth goal! They can dress up in their costumes on Wednesday!

What We’re Learning:

Math-We are starting Addition facts with sums to 20! Please practice the flashcards you created at home. Feel free to send in a picture of your child practicing them for a ticket! We will also do some fun and spooky math arts and crafts this week!

Reading- We will be learning about Main Idea and Details this week.

Writing-This week will will create a teaching book about “How to Carve a Pumpkin.”

Phonics-We will start our Phonics Unit on blends and will begin next week with the blends, fl- i.e. flood and  fr- i.e. frog.

Science- We will begin our unit on sound.

S.T.E.A.M.-Students will invent a device to serve as a recess bell.

Week of October 15th!

Reminders:

  • The Tritt-Mazing Race Fundraiser has begun! Our first count day is this Monday, October 15th! Please send in all envelopes Monday morning! If we meet our class goal, we will all be enjoying a sock party day AND extra recess! Thank you in advance for your support in making Tritt Amazing!
  • This whole week is Early Release  for Conference Week and I look forward to meeting with you all!

What We’re Learning:

Math-We will spiral back to place value to 100 and will segue into comparing numbers, using their place value i.e. we have to compare the tens place value before the ones place value.

Reading- We will start learning about the Non-fiction Text Features i.e. Table of Contents, Glossary, Index, Heading, etc. and how these features help us to navigate and learn from Non-fiction text.

Writing-We will start our unit on Informational Writing during which they will get to write about all of the things they love and have learned so much about!

Phonics-We will start our Phonics Unit on blends and will begin next week with the blends, -br i.e. brand and  -bl i.e. blimp.

Science- We will start our unit on light and shadows!

Reminders:

  • Please sign and return the bottom portion of your the Conference Form in your child’s blue folder if you haven’t already.
  • We will be going to the ILC on Tuesday. Please send in your child’s library books.
  • Early Release is this Thursday, October 13th.
  • Please check out your child’s latest S.T.E.A.M. buddy picture posted in Seesaw!

What We’re Learning:

Math-We will start solving word problems using our addition and subtraction math facts. To solve these problems we will follow certain steps: Understand, Plan, Solve and Explain. To Understand, students will circle the facts, then underline the question. Please continue working on those math facts at home!

Reading-I will be assessing students on their end of quarter reading levels for the Q1 Report Cards. Students will be reviewing all reading strategies learned in the first quarter: decoding strategies, story elements and asking questions.

Writing-Students will do a final narrative writing piece for our Narrative Unit. We will also review proper sentence structure: starting with a capital letter and ending with a punctuation mark.

Phonics-We will be reviewing the words and vowel sounds from the quarter, words with the short vowel sounds: a,e,i,o and u.

Science- We will wrap up our unit on weather by going to the ILC and recording our very own weather broadcast! There will also be an assessment on precipitation.
