Important Reminders:

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will continue reinforcing math facts and will use these facts in fun, cooperative style games this week.

Reading– This week I will be  wrapping up reading assessments and we will continue to read fun, holiday themed books.

Writing-We will have a writers’ celebration this week, honoring Mrs. Fernandes’ fabulous writers! We will also write creative stories about the adventures of our fictional gingerbread characters. These will come home Wednesday with a fun gingerbread house craft.

Week of December 11th!

Stay Warm this Weekend!

Important Reminders:

  • A big THANK YOU to Alyse’s mom, Brenda, for coming in and teaching our class all about Hanukkah. We had SO much fun reading stories, eating latkes, and playing the Dreidel game.
  • This Wednesday we will be going to the ILC! Please send in all library books!
  • Continue having your child read to you for 20 minutes every night, as well as practice his/her addition and subtraction flashcards. Just a little bit each day goes a LONG way!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-This week we will continue reinforcing our math facts to 20 and their related fact families. We will also continue applying our math skills while solving word problems. This month we will also spend time reviewing all the new skills that we have learned this year.

Reading– This week I will be assessing student’ reading levels, sight word recognition and comprehension skills. Believe it or not, we are at the end of the second quarter! We will also be reviewing all of the strategies we have learned this year so far: main idea and supporting details, story elements: characters, setting, plot, and author’s purpose. I have finished reading a Magic Tree House book to the class and we are on to an A-Z Mystery!

Phonics- This week we will continue reviewing consonant blends and final e.

Writing-We will continue learning about singular and plural nouns. We will also be writing about our favorite things about this season!

Social Studies-We will be finishing our informational pieces on Thomas Jefferson.

S.T.E.M.- This month we will be engaging in fun, holiday-themed STEM projects!

Week of December 4th!

Important Reminders:

  • As per school policy, there will be NO Homework in the month of December. Please use this time to read fun, holiday-themed books with your children every night. ENJOY the season!
  • Please send back Family Journals on Monday.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-This week we will be reinforcing our math facts to 20 and their related fact families. We will also continue applying our math skills while solving word problems. This month we will also spend time reviewing all the new skills that we have learned this year.

Reading– This week we will continue reading passages and answering related comprehension questions. We are practicing the skills of going back to the passage, rereading, and underlining the important information. I am reinforcing what an important and lifelong skill this is for them!

Phonics- This week we will be reviewing consonant blends and final e.

Writing-We will have fun this month writing about holiday-themed informational pieces. We will also be working very hard on improving our handwriting. For grammar, we will be learning about singular and plural nouns.

Social Studies-We will be writing informational pieces on Thomas Jefferson.

S.T.E.M.- This month we will be engaging in fun, holiday-themed STEM projects!

Week of November 27th!

 

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be learning about place value and decomposing numbers this week into tens and ones. We will also spiral back to adding and subtracting to 20. Please continue to work on this at home. If they don’t use it, they lose it!

Reading– This week we will start focusing more upon reading passages and answering comprehension questions from these passages. We will practice highlighting the most important details in a passage in order to more easily answer the questions related to the passage.

Phonics- This week’s phonic’s skill will be words ending in “-ck” as in “struck” and “quack.”

Writing-We will continue writing our Informational pieces this week on an animal of their choice as well as about Thomas Jefferson. We are “hitting our stride” with writing and they are all making huge gains!

Social Studies-We will continue learning about our brilliant founding father, and former president, Thomas Jefferson!! This is such a great and important unit for the students and we will learn just how difficult it was to create something as great as America!!

S.T.E.M.-This week we will be engaging in a building challenge. Students will be given building blocks, as well as the specifications of what they need to build (i.e. the specific structure, weight it needs to hold, its height.) Students will get various opportunities to create different structures. Our budding engineers will really enjoy STEM this week!

Important Reminders:

  • There is NO School next week, Monday, November 20th-Friday, November 24th! HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I know I am very thankful for my wonderful students and parents this year!!
  • THANK YOU to our veterans who came in to speak to our class today: Hannah Berry’s grandfather, Mr. Lee, Tobin Jorgensen’s grandfather, Mr. Russ and Ben Florence’s grandfather, Mr. Jack. We honor you and all veterans for your service, sacrifice and patriotism!
  • Monday is the last day of Tritt’s Thanksgiving food drive. Please send in any donations that you can.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be solving true/false equations this week. Students will have to solve both sides of the equation and label the equations as true or false. They will have to solve addition and subtraction problems to 20 in order to do this, so please continue to work on those flashcards at home!

Reading– This week we will have fun reading all about Thanksgiving themed topics: Pilgrims, Native American Indians, and fun books about turkeys! After reading, students will be able to answer comprehension questions.We will use all of the reading skills we have learned so far this year while reading these fun texts!

Phonics- This week’s phonic’s skill will be the Long I sound as in “drive.”

Writing-We will write some creative turkey stories this week, incorporating our skills learned throughout our Informational Unit so far.  We will also finish writing about all of the things that we are thankful for.

Social Studies-We will be learning about another brilliant founding father, and former president, Thomas Jefferson!! This is such a great and important unit for the students and we will learn just how difficult it was to create something as great as America!!

S.T.E.M.- Students loved creating their sound instruments and reinforced their understanding of sound in the process! This week we will be creating our very own hot air balloon parade. Students will be given a balloon and will have to transform their balloons into an animal, character from a movie, etc. They will then be given the opportunity to create a skit, song, or dance incorporating their creation. To culminate, we will be parading throughout the school in our very own Thanksgiving Day Parade!

Week of November 6th!

Important Reminders:

  • Election Day-No School this Tuesday, November 7th for students!
  • Please send in a water bottle and/or shoe box if your child is needing it for his/her sound instrument sound project. Their sheets were sent home Thursday with the materials needed.  We will be building this Thursday, November 9th!
  • November Choice Boards will be coming home Monday. These assignments will be due Friday, December 1st.

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will start learning about unknown variables-i.e. VERY simple and rudimentary algebra i.e. 8+?=14. We also call this missing addends. Once they have a strong understanding of this, we will move into higher level word problems involving missing addends.

Reading– This week we will start focusing on why authors write what they do. Authors write to Persuade, Inform, or Entertain. We will identify the “points” authors are trying to make in their books and also the reasons an author gives to support these points. We will also continue reading all about bats!

Phonics- This week’s phonic’s skill will be the Long o sound as in “spoke.”

Writing-We will continue our Informational Writing Unit this week! Also, November is the month to give thanks, so this week we will start writing about all the things in our lives that we are thankful for. We will also write fun, November-themed sticker stories.

Science-We will continue learning about sound this week and will culminate the unit by sharing our sound instruments, while identifying the different pitches, volumes, energy and vibrations created by them all.

S.T.E.M.- This week we will build our sound instruments! Please make sure to send a shoebox and/or water bottle for your child if he/she needs it. I have all the other materials on the list!

Week of October 30th!

Important Reminders:

  • Happy Halloween! This week there will be NO Homework other than reading and practicing math facts. Enjoy the celebrations!
  • This Tuesday, Halloween, please send your child in with his/her costume. No masks, face paint, nor accessories-thank you!!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will continue subtracting numbers to 20, i.e. 14-8=6, as well as solving related word problems.  There will be an assessment on Friday including word problems.

Reading– This week we will start focusing on connections we can make while we’re reading and how these connections can help us better comprehend. Please make sure that your child is reading 20 minutes each night!

Phonics- We will spend the week reviewing Units 1-8 by playing fun spelling games and Kahoot!

Writing-We will continue our Informational Writing Unit this week! This week we will write informational pieces about bats! We will focus on our editing skills: using capital letters at the beginning and periods at the end of our sentences.

Science-We will wrap up our unit on Magnets and will kick off our unit on Sound! We will have our in-school field trip Sound Presentation.

S.T.E.M.- We will start designing and planning our sound instruments. We will create a list of materials needed for each student and will send this home.

Week of October 23rd!

Important Reminders:

  • Our THIRD Count day is this Monday, the 23rd! We earned our Costume Party and are now working towards our 5th Goal-a class pizza party!!!
  • Please send in all library books this Wednesday. We are going to the ILC!
  • S.T.E.M. materials needed: Shoeboxes for our inventions! Please send in Monday!
  • Our Tritt-Mazing Race is this Friday, the 27th!! Our time is from 10:45 a.m.-11:30 a.m.                 if you’d like to cheer on Mrs. Fernandes’ Fabulous Firecrackers! Have your child wear his/her     green First grade Tritt shirts!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be subtracting numbers to 20, i.e. 14-8=6. This is typically a more difficult unit for students, so please help your child by using math flashcards at home. They can count backwards, use a number line and/or use any manipulatives you may have i.e. buttons, pasta, coins, etc. We will also be solving word problems using these subtraction facts.

Reading– This week we will continue focusing upon the main ideas about what we read and their supporting details. Please make sure that your child is reading 20 minutes each night!

Phonics- Our phonics skill this week will be words with the long a sound such as: cake, drape and lane.

Writing-We will continue our Informational Writing Unit this week! This week we will write informational pieces about magnets as well as more fall themed activities, i.e. carving a pumpkin.

Science-We will kick off our fun unit on magnets and students will be able to experiment by testing magnets with different objects. We will be focusing on the vocabulary words: attract and repel.

S.T.E.M.-We will be wrapping up our own unique inventions! Ask your child about theirs!

Important Reminders!

  • IMPORTANT-Our First Count Day for our Annual PTA Fundraiser: The Tritt-Mazing Race is this Monday, October 16th!  Please send in any donations on Monday! FYI, I will be sleeping over for the BIG Tritt Sleepover incentive :).
  • We will have an Early Release Week this Week, October 16th-October 20th for Conference Week. I look forward to meeting with you all!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be bringing it all together with fact families! Students will be able to see the relationship between addition and subtraction, which should help them with their math facts, i.e. the 6,4,10 fact family consists of: 6+4=10, 4+6=10, 10-6=4, and 10-4=6.

Reading– This week we will be focusing upon the main ideas about what we read and their supporting details. Please make sure that your child is reading 20 minutes each night!

Phonics- Our phonics skill this week will be words that start with 3-letter blends such as: split. strip, and sprint

Writing-We will continue our Informational Writing Unit this week! Students enjoyed writing about what they are an expert at. They will get to teach the class this week. We will also write about fall themed activities and Benjamin Franklin.

Social Studies-We will continue learning about Benjamin Franklin this week and will create a book to tell all about him.

S.T.E.M.-This week, students will get to be “inventors,” emulating Benjamin Franklin. We will kick off this fun S.T.E.M. project this week.

Week of October 9th!

Important Reminders!

  • Please send back the Sound permission slip form with the payment. I still need about 6 more!
  • We will have an Early Release Day this Thursday, October 12th!
  • This week the PTA’s annual fundraiser begins. Be on the look out for materials to come home Wednesday!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be adding numbers to 20 now. Please make or buy flashcards to practice with your children at home each night. It is very helpful for them to memorize these facts!

Reading– This week we will build on our understanding of Fiction vs. Nonfiction and will focus on all of the text features of Nonfiction books: Table of Contents, Glossary, Index, Heading and Captions.

Phonics- Our phonics skill this week will be words that end in m and f blends. We will have a test this Friday.

Writing-We will start our Informational Writing Unit this week! This is always a big hit. Students will get to write a “How To” book on something that they are an expert in and will get to teach the class.

Social Studies-This week we will start our unit on the brilliant founding father, Benjamin Franklin. This is an awesome unit and the students are always so amazed at all of his contributions to our modern society.

S.T.E.M.- Everyone LOVED making their weather instruments! You may have had yours brought home already! This week, students will get to be “inventors,” emulating Benjamin Franklin. We will kick off this fun S.T.E.M. project this week.
