Week of November 27th!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be learning about place value and decomposing numbers this week into tens and ones. We will also spiral back to adding and subtracting to 20. Please continue to work on this at home. If they don’t use it, they lose it!

Reading– This week we will start focusing more upon reading passages and answering comprehension questions from these passages. We will practice highlighting the most important details in a passage in order to more easily answer the questions related to the passage.

Phonics- This week’s phonic’s skill will be words ending in “-ck” as in “struck” and “quack.”

Writing-We will continue writing our Informational pieces this week on an animal of their choice as well as about Thomas Jefferson. We are “hitting our stride” with writing and they are all making huge gains!

Social Studies-We will continue learning about our brilliant founding father, and former president, Thomas Jefferson!! This is such a great and important unit for the students and we will learn just how difficult it was to create something as great as America!!

S.T.E.M.-This week we will be engaging in a building challenge. Students will be given building blocks, as well as the specifications of what they need to build (i.e. the specific structure, weight it needs to hold, its height.) Students will get various opportunities to create different structures. Our budding engineers will really enjoy STEM this week!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Math-We will be solving true/false equations this week. Students will have to solve both sides of the equation and label the equations as true or false. They will have to solve addition and subtraction problems to 20 in order to do this, so please continue to work on those flashcards at home!

Reading– This week we will have fun reading all about Thanksgiving themed topics: Pilgrims, Native American Indians, and fun books about turkeys! After reading, students will be able to answer comprehension questions. We will use all of the reading skills we have learned so far this year while reading these fun texts!

Phonics- This week’s phonic’s skill will be the Long I sound as in “drive.”

S.T.E.M.- Students loved creating their sound instruments and reinforced their understanding of sound in the process! This week we will be creating our very own hot air balloon parade. Students will be given a balloon and will have to transform their balloons into an animal, character from a movie, etc. They will then be given the opportunity to create a skit, song, or dance incorporating their creation. To culminate, we will be parading throughout the school in our very own Thanksgiving Day Parade!

What We’re Learning This Week:

Science-We will continue learning about sound this week and will culminate the unit by sharing our sound instruments, while identifying the different pitches, volumes, energy and vibrations created by them all.

S.T.E.M.- This week we will build our sound instruments! Please make sure to send a shoebox and/or water bottle for your child if he/she needs it. I have all the other materials on the list!
