- Please send in a teddy bear with your child on Monday to commemorate President Theodore Roosevelt!
- This week is Atlanta Falcon’s Spirit Week!! Monday is hat day! The Countdown to the Superbowl LI has begun!! Still hard to believe!!
- Keep an eye out for spare shoe boxes around the house. They will be needing these to create their Valentine’s boxes at home in a couple of weeks!
Reading: We will work on their ability to retell the stories they read by summarizing the beginning, middle and ending of the stories. Please remember, as part of the homework every night, students have to complete a reading log sheet in their homework notebooks that helps them to use these skills at home.
Writing: We will continue working on our opinion pieces, making sure that we include an opening sentence, supporting reasons and a closing sentence. They tried their hand at editing their pieces this week and did a great job!
Phonics: This week we will be learning about making the Long I sound by using the letters “ight” as in bright, “y” as in try, and “ye” as in bye. This will probably be the most challenging week so far, so try to allot some additional study time at home! We will have a spelling test on Friday :).
Social Studies: We will wrap up our unit on President Theodore Roosevelt. We will send a book home on Monday to review and will have an assessment on Tuesday.
Science: Just in time for Groundhog’s Day, we will be starting our unit on Light and Shadows. This unit will give students an understanding of light and how, exactly, shadows are formed.
S.T.E.M. Students had so much fun creating their unique versions of snowmen. It was very impressive to see how individual each one was. They had limited resources and certain size parameters and did a great job! I’ve never quite seen snowmen like that before! This week we will be be doing a S.T.E.M. project incorporating our Light and Shadows unit we are starting in Science.
