We did  it!! Mrs. Fernandes’ Spooky Crew was amazing!! Everyone ran, jumped, and hurdled their hearts out! Way to go Mrs. Fernandes’ Spooky Crew!! Our class also designed an awesome poster which they each put their mark on!

Weekly Reminders:

  • This week, Homework Folders will be sent home Tuesday, not Monday!
  • Costume Party! MONDAY, October 31st! Happy Halloween! Students will come to school wearing their costumes. No masks, please!
  • New Date for Thanksgiving Play-Wednesday, November 16th. 9:45 a.m. in the Music Room

Our Week At  A Glance:

Math: We will start to recognize math equations as True or False. This will be a fun and different way to review our addition and subtraction facts. Please continue to work with your children at home using flashcards for memorization (facts 0-20)! It will make their lives so much easier 🙂

Reading: We will start learning about the features of nonfiction text! We will start to learn about the Table of Contents, Index and Glossary this week. If you have any nonfiction books at home, please try to reinforce this concept! Please make sure your children are reading 20 minutes every night!!

Writing: We will continue writing informational pieces. This week students will write about what they are an expert at. This could be a sport, an animal, their favorite game, etc. Continue reinforcing capitalization and ending punctuation at home!

Phonics: We will be learning about words with 3-letter blends, i.e.spring. Our tapping technique will come in handy with these words. Please look for the complete list in their red Homework Folders. As always, there will be a spelling test on Friday on 10 of those words, plus a Bonus word.

Science: We will start our unit on Sound!

S.T.E.M. We learned this week about the inventions that kids have created: earmuffs, the snowboard, popcicles. They were so excited to learn that they too can become an inventor, even as a kid! They designed their own invention. We will build our inventions using household items this week!

Weekly Reminders:

  • The Tritt Dash is this Friday, October 28th! Our time for the 1st grade is from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Please come volunteer or simply to cheer on Mrs. Fernandes’ Spooky Crew!
  • Please continue to collect $$ for Tritt! We will have one more opportunity to send in our envelopes this week. Our class is still short of attaining our 4 goals! Thank you!

Our Week At  A Glance:

Math: We will continue our math facts with subtraction from 10-20, i.e. 16-9=7.  We will also start to use these facts in word problems. Please continue to work with your children at home using flashcards for memorization! It will make their lives so much easier 🙂

Reading: We will continue working on Main Ideas and Supporting Details this week. We will be taking the R.I., Reading Inventory assessment this week to gauge their growth since the beginning of the year. Please make sure your children are reading 20 minutes every night!!

Writing: We will continue writing informational pieces. The students learned the acronym for capitals, M.I.N.T.S. (Months, “I“, Names, Titles and Starts of Sentences). We will continue working on this and you can and should correct this if you see it improperly written in their writing at home!

Phonics: We will start our unit on words with the wh and th digraphs. Please look for the complete list in their red homework folders on Monday. As always, there will be a spelling test on Friday on 10 of those words, plus a Bonus word.

Science: We will wrap up our fun unit on Magnets!

S.T.E.M. I will be attending a S.T.E.M. conference at UGA on Monday. I’m excited to bring back some great ideas. This week students will be introduced to creating an invention with reusable items from home!

Week of October 17th!

On Friday we were visited by our amazing founding father, Ben Franklin. We learned even more about his great accomplishments. How one person could achieve so much in a lifetime is beyond me!

Weekly Reminders:

  • Please send in the Sound field trip persmission slip if you haven’t yet!
  • This week is Early Release, Conference Week!
  • The Tritt Dash has officially begun! This is Tritt’s main fundraiser. Please help your child to raise money for our school’s annual fundraiser!! Please send the envelopes in on Monday for our First count day. Any students who raise $100 by this Monday, October 17th, will get to go to the ice cream truck!!!! Please see the email I sent for more prize/incentive details!!

Math: We will start our Math Facts from 10-20, i.e. 8+7=15. Please continue to work with your children at home using flashcards for memorization! It will make their lives so much easier 🙂

Reading: We will be focusing on Main Ideas and Supporting Details this week while reading fun, bat books (fiction and nonfiction). Please make sure your children are reading 20 minutes every night!!

Writing: We will continue writing factual pieces. We will also start learning about and focusing upon Capitalization, at the beginning of sentences and those tricky proper nouns!!

Phonics: We will start our unit on words with the ch and sh digraphs. Please look for the complete list in their red homework folders on Monday. As always, there will be a spelling test on Friday on 10 of those words, plus a Bonus word.

Science: We will start our fun unit on Magnets!

S.T.E.M. We observed our water containers and learned that some prevented evaporation better than others. We reflected upon our reasons for this and discussed insulation, etc.

Week of October 10th!

We are all getting so excited learning about the sights, sounds and smells of fall! We have been collecting items for our classroom wreath and will continue with our fall theme for this week. Can you please send in (1) apple with your children on Monday? We will use these apples to sort, compare, observe, taste, etc. Thank you!

Reminders:

Thanksgiving Play- Monday, November 14th- Please mark your calendars! Our play and reception will be in the morning. Exact times to follow!

Our Week At  A Glance:

Math: We will continue solving word problems this week. We will focus more on subtraction word problems this week, but will review addition as well. We will have an assessment at the end of the week.  We will focus on the process: underling the information, circling the question, and drawing out the solution. Many students followed these steps with their homework this week!

Reading: We will continue identifying the problem and solution of stories as well as summarizing and retelling skills. This is such a fun month of the year to read engaging, fall-themed stories that the children love! Please make sure your children are reading 20 minutes every night!!

Writing: We will change gears a bit from our narrative unit, and will start writing informational pieces about fall. The students blew me away with their family journals this week. It is amazing to see how much they have grown as writers!!

Phonics: We will start our unit on words ending in -ft, -lp, -lt, -mp. There will be another spelling test on Friday, October 14th. Now that students are becoming pros at the spelling test routine, I’m going to increase the words they are expected to know. However, I will still only test them on 10 words.  Please look for the complete list in their red homework folders on Monday.

Social Studies: We will continue learning about the amazing Benjamin Franklin! The children are absolutely loving learning about our brilliant founding father, and it is so much fun to watch! They have been working hard all week creating their Ben Franklin books. Please look for these books to come home Tuesday and please read them with your child. We will have an assessment on this unit Thursday.

S.T.E.M. We will emulate Benjamin Franklin by designing our own useful creations out of recycled materials from home. I will send a note home Monday soliciting materials for this creation.

Week of October 3rd!

WELCOME BACK!! We are ready for all things fall, mostly the fall temperatures! Hopefully it will start to feel like fall soon!

I hope that everyone enjoyed some rest and relaxation over the past week. I really look forward to seeing all of our students’ pictures from their vacations.  Please remember to send in a picture or two on Monday! I will share mine, as well!

We would like to invite you to walk/ bike to school on Wednesday, Oct 5. You can walk/bike with your parents or you can join the Tritt Staff at the following spots:
• Mrs. Keesling & Mrs. Oubs at the Walden Lane entrance of Chimney Springs.
• Mrs. Gentry at the that top of Revere Circle in Chimney Springs (look for the smiley face balloon)
• Mrs. Smarr & Mrs. McFerrin at the Chimney Springs Clubhouse.
• Mr. Theriault & Mr. Guinta at the YMCA.
• Mrs. DeMeester & Mrs. Kappel at the Walden Estates Dr. Cul-de-Sac.
• If you want to ride your bike: meet Mrs. Dean at the YMCA.
All bikers will meet at 6:45; all walkers will meet at each spot at 6:55.

Our Week At  A Glance:

Math: We will start solving word problems this week involving addition and subtraction. We will focus on the process: underling the information, circling the question, visualizing the problem. We will have many fall-themed word problems to make this unit more lively!

Reading: This week we will be reviewing all of the reading comprehension strategies we have learned so far: asking questions, visualizing, sequencing/retelling, and story elements: characters, setting, illustrations, the problem and solution. I will also review fiction and non-fiction books and will  circle them into our reading centers. Please make sure your children are reading 20 minutes every night!!

Writing: Please remember to send in a picture or 2 from your fall break! We will be using these pictures to write narratives throughout the week. We will continue to use our Writers’ Workshop structure to create our pieces.

Phonics: We will start our unit on words ending in –ng, -nk, -nd and -nt. There will be another spelling test on Friday, October 7th. Students did really well on their first spelling test! They felt very grown up! It was great to see them all tapping and sounding out the sounds for their words.

Social Studies: We will be learning about the amazing Benjamin Franklin! I am SO excited to teach our students about this impressive historical figure. Their minds will be blown learning about his incredible intelligence and contributions to all that we have today!!

S.T.E.M. All students designed their water containers which prevented evaporation, but also allowed someone to drink from them. This week we will be bringing their plans to life using the materials they used in their designs. They will create their water containers with their selected group members.
